The Last Unicorn by Sorelstrasz The Last Unicorn by Sorelstrasz
I recently watched The Last Unicorn for the first time. To be honest with you, I can't believe I missed it in my childhood. So to make up for it and to give this story the respect it deserves, I have decided to use every ounce of my artistic abilities to create one of my most detailed pieces to date. This was also my first time vectoring my own background and I wanted to make it as detailed as possible. Needless to say wanting such quality requires a lot of time on my part. I also revamped my lighting and shading to be more show accurate. If you haven't watched this movie or read the book, you should totally check it out! :)

I also want to give a shoutout to those hard working people that have given us others those backgrounds and vectors. Over the past year, I have been progressing in my vectoring abilities to make things as show accurate as I can and I wouldn't have been able to get to where I am today without those who can dish out those vectors with a keen eye and an artistic mind. You guys are awesome and I now understand how tedious and demanding it is to get those things finished. Thank you so much!

Hey there Sorelstrasz, Great work on this piece, I hope that this critique will help you improve your already developing set of vector skills.

Strokes: You do a great job of tapering your strokes, however you missed your mark in one stroke specific are the body stroke of your character in this scene is far to fat. In the linked .svg I changed your stroke to be about 12px in a couple of places to show how that might serve this piece better. You failed to make the stroke of the outline and the stroke of the mane/tail the same, something that could have improved this from a technical standpoint.

Eye: Something that I really liked at first about this was the eye. I'm quite partial to the heave eye liner you have put on this, it really serves the piece well. I would recommend not making the eye lines go all the way around her eye, but rather taper to a point on the lower half. I've included a modified version in the .svg at the end of this critique.

Value: you hit the value of the mountain dead on here. the lightest parts are the pony, the path, the moon, and the lake. I would consider making the lake darker on the left like on the right as it will pull the eye away from it and also stay consistent with the shadow the mountain is casting.

Shadows: Speaking of shadows you did a great job of making sure the shadows cast from the trees work in relation to the moon. You might want to use darker colors for the flowers in the bush.

Color: The outline of your pony is much to stark of a contrast compared to the body color, if you are going for a mlp semi-show style character. There is a tree with a purple base around it... This scene gets really blue in the dark, which is what the show does in alot of cases and it works well here.

other things: make sure that when making ears like this you're not just cheating the tip of the ear by making it with a rounded joint, but actually using smooth nodes near the tip. The base of the horn should possibly be flush with the outline of the head like in most side shots ou'd find in the show or taper nothinbg on one side and turn and taper on the other like here: hourglasspony.deviantart.com/a... also there is this strange purple star radiating from the horn on the unicorn, this may be a character detail I don't know of though as admittedly I have never seen the film. The tail appears to be blowing in the wind while nothing else in the scene is. I don't really have any solution for this unfortunately, just an observation.

To sum things up here this a very nice vector and I hope this critique was helpful. I'd list all of the things I liked about it but I don't feel like typing for hours on end. If you're ever looking for another critique don't hesitate to drop me a note.

I was really trying to go for that approach, especially because in the movie the artistic level of each scene is so well thought out that I had to stick to a more artistic approach... even with the background. Thank you so much for your praise! :D
